Reverence – Part 1

A few months ago I started a new habit. Each morning I take a moment to kneel on the floor. In that moment I tell God that I am handing my day over to Him. I tell Him that I want all my words and actions to be for His honor and glory.

Kneeling in prayer is often found in the Bible. But I don’t believe many people do this today. I realize this is difficult for some with disabilities. So don’t try it if you can’t get back up! If this is the case, then in your prayer, tell the Lord you are kneeling in your heart.

Kneeling before God is an act of reverence. We show God that we respect Him and fear Him with a godly fear. I feel the art of reverence is being lost, little by little, with each generation. For example, we all know that many people use the Lord’s name inappropriately. Too many people do not give God a second thought, let alone give Him respect. Even Christians allow their pride to get in the way and stop them from fully surrendering to our Holy God.

God is greater than everything we know and can imagine. He is the only One who is completely holy and righteous. Our best efforts are filthy rags in His sight (Isaiah 64:6). We deserve the worst punishment. But thanks to His unfailing love, we have been given the gift of salvation. He gave us life and breath. Each day He shows us mercy and grace. There are so many reasons why we should show God reverence.

If reverence is an area in which you would like to grow, simply ask God to help you. He certainly will oblige. And even just the fact that you asked will help turn your heart around. You also can make it a practice to get on your knees each morning, as I do. This practice has helped shape my days for the better. It reminds me to praise Him and to honor Him. It reminds me to do my best each day, for His glory. It reminds me to not allow minor circumstances to affect my attitude. It reminds me that my whole life belongs to Him.

I challenge you today to take some time to evaluate your heart’s posture before the Lord. Do you need a renewed sense of reverence? If so, then pray about it and take a moment to get on your knees, either physically or in your heart. And He will be faithful to meet you there.

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. – Psalm 95:6

  1. I just love the habit you started of taking the time to kneel before God every morning.
Having reverence is to respect Him for who He truly is – loving, yes but also all powerful and mighty. It is acknowledging His lordship over all areas of your life.
I am reminded of the verse, Hebrews 5:7 which says “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.”
‭‭A much needed reminder today to revere and honour our king and Lord.
    Blessings my dear friend 😊💙

    • Oh I love the verse you shared. And the last part especially hit home – “he was heard because of his reverent submission.” What a beautiful reminder that when we show reverent submission our prayers will reach God’s ears! I pray we (and the world) will learn to properly and humbly revere the one and only God! Blessings to you too, my friend! ❤️

  2. I miss being able to kneel in prayer.

Side note: Were you able to find the prayer cards? If not, would you like mine? I would send them after I finish the 40 days. I’m careful, so they’d still be pretty. 🙂

  3. Think about it…do we not get on our knees because of health issues or is it a heart issue. Maybe we don’t get down on our knees to pray regularly because of pride. It’s certainly worth pondering. Getting on our knees shows submission, authority over us. I appreciate your post because it helps to expose the excuses we use. At Bible Study, most everyone kneels to pray. I think it’s a practice we should exercise more frequently.

    • Such a good point, Renee! You are right. Our pride gets in the way and makes it a heart issue. I love that your Bible study group kneels to pray. When we get on our knees – that is when we are the strongest! ✝️

  4. This is a wonderful post Bridget. If we are able bodied it may be easier to physically show reverence. The true test of our reverence is in our heart. The physical act is wonderful though. It’s such a great reminder to let the heart follow. ❤ Thanks for sharing.

  5. What a great habit to start! I never really thought of kneeling that way. I often lift my face to the sky when I pray because it’s almost like I can feel Him more when I do that. (If that makes any sense! lol!)

    • Yes it does make sense! In fact I do that when I am outdoors and talking to God. I don’t think I do it much indoors. But I still love the idea. You can almost feel His love shining down on your face! 🥰

      • I just thought of something and had to tell you! The night before last I was taking my dog out and I was looking at the sky thanking God for the day. A very small shooting star fell in the exact spot I was looking! It made me feel like it was a sign from Him! It was just so comforting and exactly what I needed that night.
