My One Word for 2024

I love when we begin a new year. It feels like a clean slate or a fresh start. Many people make New Year’s Resolutions or set goals for the year. Those are good ideas, if we can keep our motivation going.

However, we don’t need a new year to embark on a better path. Each moment we have opportunities to make positive changes in our lives. Whether it’s our health, our finances, our attitudes, our spiritual life, or anything else.

There might be many things we want to change. That’s when our goals can become overwhelming. We don’t know where to start. And then we might fizzle from exhaustion.

No matter what our goals may be, having one word (or phrase) for the year is something we can stay committed to for twelve months. Having a word to focus on each day can help guide our way through the year. The hope is that each day we will make better choices, grow closer to the Lord, and become better versions of ourselves. That is why I like to pick a word for the year.

I like to ask God for assistance in picking a word, and that’s what I did for 2024. There are some people who don’t pick a word until after January 1. However, if possible, I like to know my word ahead of time. In November I prayed and asked God to show me what word I should hold onto in 2024. After that, there was a certain word that kept making an appearance in things I listened to or read (including some of your blog posts 😁).

You know how people say that when you meet the right person, you just know that’s who you should spend your life with? Oftentimes, that’s how it is with picking a word for the year. 😂 You “just know” that’s your word. And that’s how I felt with my word for 2024.

I’m sure you want me to spit it out already! So here it is.

My one word for 2024 is Presence!

I want to focus on the Presence of God in my life. I fear that too often we miss what the Lord is doing in our lives. We might overlook His goodness in each day. We could misread our circumstances and think that Jesus has forgotten about us.

“The Father is actively working in your situation and guiding you even when you don’t perceive Him.” – Charles F. Stanley

We might know in our hearts that the Lord has not forgotten about us. Yet life gets in the way. And the enemy will try to steer our thoughts in a different direction.

God is always with us. He will never leave His children or forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6). He is always working everything together for good (Romans 8:28). The Lord is active in our lives.

I believe His presence is always there. But sometimes we miss this gift. Jesus’ presence is a present in the present! 😁

“Like a tree sends its roots down deep into the subterranean world, we must learn to tap into the presence of God where he resides within us, deep in our inmost being.” – John Eldredge

I like to pick a Bible verse to go along with my word, if possible. In this case, it’s definitely possible. The New Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible lists 116 verses containing the word Presence. So I hope to do a little exploring on those in the new year. But for 2024 my anchor verse will be:

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” – Psalm 16:11 ESV

Each part of this verse is meaningful. It is a good reminder that God will guide us on our path, and that He brings pleasure into our earthly lives and eternal lives. But I especially love the truth that the Lord’s presence brings us fullness of joy. What a gift!

I realize it is still early for some, but if you have chosen a word or phrase for 2024, I would love to hear what it is.

  1. Bridget, thank you for sharing your word. I have not yet thought much about it but I will pray about it. I look forward to reading all the ways you will take note and experience his presence through this year and the new insights you will gain.
    Praying for the procedures you will have in Jan and for healing for those in your life.

  2. I love your word for the year, Bridget, and the scripture that goes with it is one of my favorites.
    My squirrel 🐿️ brain was reading and thinking, “Tell us the word already!”😀

    I need to think about what my word will be this year. Thank you for the reminder.

  3. Thank you, Bridget! I’ve been blessed by your encouragement throughout this past year. I don’t have a word yet, but as you suggested, I’m praying about that. God’s presence is so powerful and life changing. And it’s something we can experience each day. I like the quote by Dr Stanley. I’m looking forward to hearing about how God brings His presence to you in this new year. Also I will be praying for you and the people in your life. I hope the procedures go well. I had medical testing in November and God blessed me, it went well. He is faithful! I have some challenging things going on, so please pray that I will remain strong in my faith and stay focused on the things God has called me to do. Thanks my friend! Happy New Year! 💛

    • Thank you, Dawn! I’ve been blessed so many Mondays by your lists too. You often have the exact words I need on a given day. I look forward to hearing what word you pick for 2024.   4. Experiencing God’s presence in our lives is precious. I often think of what the psalmist said- Who Am I that you are mindful of me. That God would want to spend time with me is mind blowing.

    • So true! I love that verse from the Psalms as well. It’s incredible to think that The Almighty God of the universe sees us, hears us, and even loves us. What a magnificent Savior we have. 🙌♥️🙏

  7. Great word to lean into in 2024. I’m not sure for myself yet but a word (or name I should say) that I truly enjoyed over this last year is Immanuel. Love the comforting reminder that God is with us, your word “presence” reminds me of the very same comfort!!

  12. Prayers for your presence, joy, and upcoming procedures, Bridget. I go back and forth with my approach for the year. This year I’m focusing on my intentions and starting with two challenges for January. I’ll reassess at the end of the month. Definitely asking God for divine help to work it all together for good.

  13. I love this. Psalm 16:11 has been a favorite verse of mine for a long time, now. I try to be still and know the presence of God every morning. It needs to be more than just a morning thing, though. My word for 2024 came up a couple days before the end of the year. It is “praise.”

  14. I haven’t ever had a word for the year, but I’ve grown to want one the past few months. After you’ve posted yours and one of my friends chooses a word for each year as well, it’s interesting to see how the helps shape the year and to grow closer to God in that way. I also seen a reel that was like take a screenshot to see what word it stops on to be your word for the year. I did that.. it was resonance. So if I keep thinking about praying… might choose that one. It relates to clarity, connection, depth and strength that can only be found in God and I think that’s what I long for the most in this next year. So tentatively… that’s where I am on a word. 🙂

    • Thank you for sharing that. I love the ways you described resonance – “clarity, connection, depth and strength that can only be found in God.” I think we all could use more of that! I love hearing other people’s words for the year and why they chose them. And it’s especially interesting how God leads us all to different words.
