Finding Peace on the Waves

Some days might feel
Like we are on the waves
Tossed around in a boat
Looking for a hand to save

Splash after splash
We get soaked
We can’t catch our breath
With no anchor of hope

Our muscles are weak
From moving the oars
We’re getting nowhere
From an endless chore

Walking on water
A figure comes near
He gently asks
If we’ll allow Him to steer

When we hand Him the oars
We can finally breathe
Our worries dissolve
And our fears leave

Now we can rest
In His loving care
For each day we know
He will be there

One night when I was in bed, trying to go to sleep, these words came to me. I had to get up and make sure I captured them before they were lost. I was thinking about how so many of us struggle in life. Day after day, we use all of our strength to tread water and stay afloat.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We try to fight our circumstances, when what we really need to do is allow Jesus to carry us. Jesus is our lifeline, and He is there to help us. However, the key is allowing Him to do so. We can walk in peace knowing that our lives are in the hands of Almighty God. It doesn’t mean we won’t have trouble. But it means we can rest because we know He is handling our battles.

I admit that it can be difficult to get to this point. It means learning to trust Jesus and remembering how faithful our Savior is. And it takes a conscious effort of relinquishing control over to Him. We might have to remind ourselves to do this daily. But in the end, the rewards are well worth it.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – the words of Jesus found in Matthew 11:28-30

  1. Beautiful words. Reading them I felt each of those lines. I needed to hear this today. Laying my anxieties and worries at his feet is a constant battle. Not letting it overcome me is something I have to constantly be aware of, but I must say that it keeps me close to him or else I feel like I am drowning with all those feelings.
Blessings to you my dear friend.

    • I agree that the our stressors keep us close to Him. And I wonder if God uses our struggles to pull us closer to Himself. When things are going well in our lives, we might not cling to Him so tightly. So at times our anxieties and fears can actually be a good thing. Thank you for reflecting with me. I love when we have good conversations in our comments.
And I am sorry for whatever you are struggling with right now. You and your family are in my prayers.
Blessings to you too, my friend. 🦋

  2. Wonderful poem Bridget. The words are so true and beautifully written. Trusting God and relinquishing control can be a process but as we learn to do it, life is so much better with less worries. Thank you ❤️

  3. Yes please!! These words of encouragement just gave me the courage I needed as I posted a somewhat vulnerable-feeling post of my own this morning. It’s helpful to know that struggling is not just me on my own, we all experience it and can point one another to Christ and gain strength ultimately from Him.

    • I am glad this was encouraging. And I am looking forward to reading your post. I have heard from several friends who have been struggling recently. God is so good to bring us a word of encouragement just when we need it. 🥰 and I agree about us pointing each other back to Him. “As iron sharpens iron.” 🦋

  4. What a beautiful poem!! And very much needed right now. I feel like I’ve been struggling and fighting for the past year. I want to give it to God and have peace but some reason I can’t let go! I hope you don’t mind if I save your poem to my phone. ❤️

    • Michelle, I don’t mind at all. I am so sorry that you have been struggling, though. I know I have heard from numerous people who have said the same. I think the enemy is involved and bringing spiritual oppression on many. But our God can break down the walls and conquer the battles we face!! 🙌 You are in my prayers, my friend!! ♥️
